When I was editor of sex, but only if it is bad, comedy, absurd, outrageous or completely disgusting. I can’t begin to write about ‘ making love ‘ because of the thought of making my toes curl. “
He protested that a male Anglo-Saxon did not feel comfor with the level of exposure-that’s why the late Auberon Waugh instigated a Review of literature on the bad sex Award for literature, to punish those who do not show such unwillingness.
Perhaps this helps explain why, year after year, the number of men nominated for bad sex award goes far beyond those by women writers. Dori Ostermiller-while there are plenty of male offenders who are famous, such as Stephen King, Lee Child, Sebastian Barry and David Guterson.
I read Guterson’s book Ed King and I must say the sex scenes (and each part of the book, come to that) that was so terrible that I removed mortifyingly them from my memory and threw the volume in the trash. Just as I think minds and souls are cleansed, here’s a Review of literature for reminding me of horrors: “in the bathroom, Ed, was in the hands of the head, behind such a person is arrested, while he only abused him with SOAP.” I can say is that this is the lightest and most tasteful quote.
I can only put a theory, but I tend to blame the higher level embarrassing sex scenes in the novel by people on the nature of their fantasies. For many years at the coalface eroticism I take note of the chapters are more likely to grow hot under the color of specific sexual scenarios: shall we say a woman in high heels that runs on it in a short skirt with no panties. While women are interested in details about the story; they are not able to convert it into a satisfying fantasy unless they’ve done to make realistic: who is this woman, what she’s backstory and motivations, and what brand heels? So when women write sex scenes they often sounds more correct and less silly. Not always, of course.
